Truckee River Winery wins again at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!
February 26, 2024
All entered wines awarded in this year's San Francsico Chronicle Competition, the largest competition of North American wines.
Truckee River Winery is proud to once again be recognized by the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for multiple varietals.
There were over fifty judges, representing various North American wine regions, evaluating over 5,500 wines from nearly 1,000 wineries for the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this year.
Truckee River Winery took home a total of 5 awards in 5 categories:
SF Chronicle’s 24th annual event:
Double Gold for 2021 Tondre Pinot Noir
Silver for 2022 Orange Barn Ramato of Pinot Grigio
Silver for 2018 Chalk Hill Malbec
Bronze for 2020 barrel aged Chardonnay
and a Bronze in the label series category for our Barn Series
The winery’s flagship 2021 Tondré Pinot Noir has full aromas of cassis and sweet spice with a hint of fresh earth. The palate is lively and rich in dark cherry with subtly toasted french oak and caramel. A smooth finish of terroir-driven hints of clove and blackberry. This Pinot goes with all events, friends, family, and of course a hearty steak.
Truckee River Winery’s 2020 Tondré oaked Chardonnay is produced in a more traditional french fashion and aged for over 1 year in new French oak. This wine develops into a crisp and smooth white with aromas of honeydew. Asian pear and orange blossom and hints of starfruit round out this wine.
For the first time, Truckee River Winery entered their wines into the new label series category, and they won a Bronze for their clean and colorful Barn Series. The Barn series has 4 varietals especially made to be enjoyed on a regular basis with friends, family and many different meals. Their White Barn, Pink Barn, Orange Barn and Red Barn wines can be purchased at many local retail, grocery and neighborhood markets. This recently updated label series was a collaboration with East River Public Relations, winemaker Katy Carroll Jones and Complete Package. With all three minds working together, a cohesive, clean and vibrant label was produced.
“For 34 years we’ve been climbing the ladder. Every year we learn and every year we make better wine,” says founder and winemaker Russ Jones. “It's great to be recognized for all of our hard work." And recognized, they
have!
Truckee River Winery had the pleasure to pour at this year's SF Public Tasting. After a 3 year hiatus, the Public Tasting roared back to life. Around 3000 people attended the event on Saturday, February 17, at Fort Mason in San Francisco. Nearly 200 wineries proudly showcased their award-winning wines, treating participants to an array of incredible flavors! Attendees indulged their senses with a plethora of delectable bites from over 20 different local food vendors. We loved showcasing our wines at this event and are looking forward to another spectacular return in 2025!
This year marks the 24th year Truckee River Winery has medaled. Truckee River Winery’s award winning wines can be purchased through their website, in person and at many restaurant and retail shops from Sparks to Grass Valley. About Truckee River Winery: In 1986, founder and winemaker Russ Jones and his friends purchased some grapes and began making wine for themselves, and in 1989 they became licensed and bonded and began perfecting high altitude wines. He’s been fine-tuning his craft and producing quality wine for the 35 years since. Almost all of the grapes are hand-picked in California, then driven up to Truckee where they are crushed that day. In 2020, Truckee River Winery consolidated to their downtown Truckee production facility, closing the doors on their tasting room. They offer tours, tastings, by the glass and bottle on their petite patio in front of their iconic winery in the red barn. A lawn bocce court, and corn hole are onsite for customer enjoyment, and picnics are welcome.
